Plectranthus
LHér. 1788

Etymology: From the Greek "plectron", meaning spur, and "anthos", meaning flower, due to the resemblance of part of its flower to a spur.
Place of Origin: Warm or temperate zones of the Southern Hemisphere such as Australia, Africa, Indonesia, and India.

Plants with a creeping habit and fleshy appearance. They have a strong tendency to cover anything they encounter along their way. They prefer partial shade and moderate temperatures. Widely used as ornamental indoor plants. Several of their species are commonly known as "Money Plant" or "Money Flower." Both the plant and its delicate flower are highly attractive.

Cultivation:

It is an extremely easy plant to cultivate. It only requires well-drained soil with abundant organic matter. It appreciates moderate fertilization, particularly with a high nitrogen content, which promotes the lush growth so characteristic of the genus. Frequent watering is highly recommended, though if neglected, the plant—thanks to its succulent nature—can withstand long periods of drought perfectly well, although it will lose all its appeal during water stress. Due to its creeping and expansive nature, it benefits from pruning to shape it somewhat and keep it contained in its area, preventing it from invading all available space.

Propagation:

It is a very easy plant to propagate. Reproduction from seeds is possible, especially if we want to obtain non-clonal specimens, but cuttings are generally used. Thanks to its tremendous vigor, taking cuttings is easy in almost any season or circumstance.

Pests:

There are virtually no pests that seriously affect it. Some leaf-eaters like caterpillars and grasshoppers may cause damage, but the effects are more visual than substantial. If we notice that some leaves have been eaten away, we should apply any suitable insecticide.

Main Taxa

Plectranthus verticillatus (Druce 1917)

Also known as the "Money Plant," it is a very widespread ornamental plant. Its great appeal, easy cultivation, and rapid growth make it an ideal choice for decorating almost any space. It produces tiny but very abundant and attractive flowers. More Information
